Rugby for Primary School Girls & Boys

Mixed Rugby (Boys and Girls)

RugRuts

From 3 – 5 year olds

Fun, inclusive games for boys and girls of all skill levels. The focus is on developing key movement skills and hand-eye coordination – and of course fun! (There is no contact/tackling at this age).

U6

Year 1

Similar to RugRuts with further development of skills. The boys and girls play tag rugby and other games. There is no contact/tackling at this age.

U7

Year 2

Playing tag rugby and other games, the boys and girls continue to develop ball skills and agility. At this age we begin playing 4-a-side festivals, which are a whole lot of fun! (Still no contact/tackling)

U8

Year 3

The boys and girls play 6-a-side tag rugby, where the team now has six tags to score. This is the last year of tag rugby and still no contact/tackling.

U9

Year 4

No more tag rugby. Still in mixed (boys and girls) teams, the players start contact (tackling) very gently, gradually building up their skills and confidence. There is still a high focus on fun activities and learning through game play. Team size grows to 7-a-side.

U10

Year 5

Still mixed Start learning new skills from the adult game of rugby, introducing an uncontested 3 player scrum, as well as the ruck and maul with 1 support player.

U11

Year 6

Develop the three player scrum including the strike, but no push. Two support players per team within the ruck and maul and players can begin kicking, but no flyhacking!

Girls Rugby

Girls Tag

Years 1 – 4

Fun, inclusive non-contact rugby for girls of all skill levels.

Girls U11

Years 5 & 6

Players start contact, very gently, gradually building up their skills and confidence. There is still a high focus on fun activities and learning through game play.

Get involved!

All of our coaches are volunteers and we’re always looking for more. You can also get involved by helping with admin, becoming a volunteer first aider or just helping with the BBQ to feed the players afterwards.

You don’t need to be a rugby player, or have any rugby experience. Much of the training in the younger age groups is about giving encouragement. But the club will also pay for you to attend coaching courses to give you specific training knowledge. There’s a role for everybody!
