Unfortunately, as you will all be aware, the Surrey Rugby season was drawn to an early close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As disappointing as this was, we totally support the decision of the RFU and Surrey in view of the health of the country.

In lieu of their annual awards ceremony, Surrey Rugby hosted a ‘Virtual Awards’ night which was very well attended by clubs across the county. Old Ruts Senior Rugby was represented by our very own JMO, I’m sure you’ll all agree that there is no finer ambassador in Senior Rugby.

Firstly, we were recognised for the 1st XV’s tremendous campaign and promotion to Surrey 1. Although COVID-19 robbed us of a first place showdown against Old Amplefordians, second place was good enough to see us back into the league we feel we belong….for now. Special thanks to Alan and Zak for their miracle work in keeping the pitch playable during one of the wettest winters on record!

Secondly we were awarded the ‘Sportsmanship’ award, given to the club observing ‘fair play both on and off the pitch.’ This award is a fantastic recognition of the work that the players put in on the pitch, but also the unseen work that goes on late at night and early in the morning from Paul and JMO. An honorable mention to Pat who has undoubtably contributed enormously towards this award with her delicious food, meaning opposition players always want to stick around for a beer or two.

Lastly, the showpiece Surrey Chairman’s Award was given to the whole Old Ruts Association, for their incredible contribution to the Dons Local Action Group COVID-19 relief effort. This has seen the Clubhouse turned into a food-hub and distribution center, run by ex-president Craig Wellstead. The food-hub has delivered over 7000 boxes of essentials to people in need in the Merton area. The Rugby section have been heavily involved – none more so than ex 1st XV and current Vet, Adam Perrin, who has masterminded the delivery list and distribution section.

It is fantastic that we have been recognised in all these ways by Surrey and I thank everyone for their contribution, particularly to the Chairman’s award which is a very special one indeed. From Rugruts all the way to Vets, this has really been a one club effort.
